Hypnosis is a state of consciousness or a state of mind. It is associated with a relaxed state that allows you to center your mind and focus your attention on the stated problem or goal.
Hypnotherapy is the technique of using hypnosis for therapy by aiding the unconscious mind in solving problems or opening to one's potential. The therapy part of the session occurs after using hypnosis to induce the state of relaxation or trance state then, stories or suggestions are offered for understanding or self-discovery and that are personally relevant to each client's particular need and desired outcome.
"A trance state is simply a state of highly focused attention" according to the Milton Erickson, M.D. Foundation. Milton Erickson is a man who is widely known and recognized as the foremost hypnotherapist of the century. Erickson described hypnosis and trance as a valuable tool used to reach the unconscious self-healing, self-correcting, comforting, and pleasure seeking resource of each client.
Erickson's theory describes a "conscious mind" and an "unconscious mind." Conscious and unconscious aspects are ideas that are highly over simplified as it is more like a variety of levels of perception, cognition, and response all working collectively together. We are using the conscious mind when learning how to use a computer or how to drive a car for instance. Yet, the unconscious mind is working too. You can suddenly catch a ball thrown at you without much thought even while solving a complex math problem. In reality, there is not a rigid boundary between the conscious and the unconscious mind but it is more like a spectrum moving from a deep sleep to a hyper-alert wakeful state with a normal wakeful state in the middle. Many activities learned in life have been stored in the unconscious part of our mind once they have been learned. We can do them while thinking of something else such as riding a bike, driving a car, sewing, cooking, and playing video games.
