Hypnosis is something like the state you are in when driving your car, day dreaming, reading a book, or playing a musical instrument and you have tuned out the unimportant stimuli around you. Anytime you are doing an activity but are on automatic pilot, your mind has moved into a light trance state. You can respond to the phone ringing or a person approaching if needed. Plus, you can put that part of the brain on autopilot that stores the information about how to play the musical instrument and enjoy the music you are playing. Also, you may remember a time when you were so focused on a daydream that you forgot everything around you and missed your exit. Your mind had moved into a state called "Alpha" in each of these scenarios.
Alpha is the lightest state of hypnosis and is easily achieved. It is the state just below the normal, alert, and awake state of "Beta." You are in this state many times a day and it is a natural state of mind. However, while in this state you are not fully "here" and not fully "out of it" either. The important thing about Alpha is that while in this state you are "200 times more suggestible and therefore more able to receive messages that influence positive change". Some clients go deeper than Alpha into "Theta" and "Delta" states while in Hypnosis but that is not necessary. You may move from one state to another during the session and that is normal. You may be aware of everything I say during the session and that is OK because you will still be in hypnosis.
You may even get the feeling of time distortion when in hypnosis like when playing video games or working on the computer and time slips away since you are so focused on what you are doing. This may happen to you today while in hypnosis.
The idea is to tap in to the unconscious mind and to encourage it to work for you with the use of hypnotherapy. Some experts say your mind has the answers but it gets all locked up due to stress, misinformation, or blocks in communication. We want to allow your mind the freedom to discover how to become comfortable or creative by allowing it to become relaxed.
You are probably wondering if hypnosis can cause you any harm. You need not worry, as hypnosis is not any more harmful than any other therapy or activity. You cannot be hypnotized without your consent or agreement. In other words, you have to want to be hypnotized in order to enter into the relaxed state of hypnosis and to gain the benefit of your goal. You will be able to hear everything said to you while in this relaxed state and you will be able to respond. Should an emergency occur, you would be able to respond immediately and appropriately.
You cannot be made to violate your values or do anything that is not acceptable to you while under hypnosis. A hypnotherapist can not make you do anything that you would not do otherwise like "rob a bank." You are in the driver's seat.
You are always in control during hypnotherapy. Just as it is your choice to enter into hypnotherapy, you can choose to end the session. For example, if you were left in a trance state by the hypnotherapist or if you were listening to a hypnotherapy CD/MP3, you would just come out of it on your own or fall asleep then, wake up later from a restful nap. You can also end the session at any time by just counting in your mind, "one-two-three."
Also, falling asleep is no problem because your hearing is always working. That part of your brain is still functioning and remains alert even if you do fall asleep. So don't worry, you will process the information during the session even if you snooze.
Are you worried that you cannot be hypnotized or make the change needed? Even intelligent and strong-willed people can be hypnotized. Often intelligent people are hypnotized more easily than others. It is a matter of whether you desire to be hypnotized and are committed to make change quickly. It is important that you feel comfortable and understand the process before beginning a session. You can expect to make great progress in your goals in 4 to 6 sessions. You can expect to do homework toward your goals between sessions and listen to your CD for 21 days to reinforce the change.
